Each Month the Morning Sun Sports Editors will Choose a Group of High School Athletes or Coaches will be Nominated for the CFX Morning Sun Athletic Excellence Award presented by Mercantile Bank!! There will be one male and one female winner chosen!
Winners get a Trophy and Certificate from JNR Engraving and their name on a Plaque at Morey Courts!

Boys nominees for May 2018
Gage Shellenbarger, Mt. Pleasant – Track & Field - Broke a 56-year old school record in the 110 hurdles with a time of 14.86. The Central Michigan recruit also won the event 10 times in 2018 and had three runner-up finishes. Qualified for D1 state finals.
Caden Foster, Breckenridge – Track & Field -Senior won regional titles in the 100 dash, 200 dash and 400 relay. Foster was ranked in the top-eight in the 100 and 200 dash and anchored 400 relay team that is ranked first in the state in Division 4.
Xavier Martin, Clare – Track & Field - Helped the Pioneers win the conference title and the Division 3 MITCA team title. Anchored 400 relay and 800 relay teams that both set school records in 2018. Finished first in the 200 dash 11 times in 12 appearances this year.
Derek Pendell, Ithaca – Track & Field - Pendell won regional titles in the 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles for the Yellow Jackets this season. Junior captain also leads the team in scoring in 2018.
Pat Alwood, Jon Baker, Adam Duflo, Tristan Johnston, Fulton – Track & Field - Fulton's 800 relay team did not lose a race in 2018 and entered the D4 state finals ranked first. Team broke 29-year old school record and entered state finals with a best time of 1:31.31.
Girls nominees for May 2018
Sydney Wright, Chippewa Hills – Softball - Junior second sacker had a great month of May for the Warriors as she hit .404 and drove in 17 runs while scoring 16 runs. Wright also stole eight bases, slugged .617 and had an on-base percentage of .464. She also had a fielding percentage of .946 in May.
Grace Mindel, Beal City – Softball - Mindel hammered the ball during the month of May for the Aggies, who won a sixth-straight conference title and extended their conference winning streak to 68 games. She hit. 581 with two homers, three triples, 10 doubles and 21 singles. She also drove in 28 runs for the seventh-ranked Aggies.
Brooklyn Federspiel, Breckenridge – Track & Field - Junior won the regional title in the shot put and is ranked second in Division 4 with a throw of 39-1. Will be one to watch next season.
Tia Everdeen, Alma – Soccer - Senior became the first player in program history to reach the 100-goal plateau. Helped Panthers win a second-straight conference title in 2018. Will be remembered as one of the best soccer players in Alma history.
Hadyn Terwilliger, SHA – Softball - Broke school record for career home runs with 24. Also hit .575 with nine homers, 20 doubles and 50 RBIs for the Irish. Future Alma College Scot also got it done in the classroom with a GPA of 3.98.
Amber Gall, Shepherd – Track & Field - Junior had a great 2018 season as she qualified for the state finals in four events. Missed breaking school record in 1,600 by .03 seconds with a time of 4:58.18. Also helped Jays win share of conference title and then won 800, 1,600 while running anchor leg in 1,600 relay in regionals. In conference championships she won 400, 800, 1,600 and was runner-up in 200, running all these events in a 55-minute span. Set school record and meet record in the Mid-Michigan Meet of Champions in the 400 with a time of 57.63.
Chloe Brittain, Breckenridge – Track & Field - Senior broke school record in the 800 with a time of 2:18.83 at Mid-Michigan Meet of Champions in her second-to-last prep meet. Future Trine University runner also graduated at Valedictorian of class.
Ashley Reihl, Beal City – Track & Field - Senior won the 300 hurdles 10 times in 13 tries this season. She broke the school record in the 300 hurdles with a time of 47.39. Also a key member on Beal City's relay teams.
Angela Kotecki, Beal City – Track & Field - Freshman had a monster season in 2018. Kotecki won the 100 dash seven times in nine tries and won the 200 a total of 10 times in 12 tries. Also won the 400 seven times in eight attempts. Set the school record in the 200 with a time of 26.13. Will be one to watch going forward.
